The OceanStore Project Open Research Projects for Undergraduates and Graduates

We always looking for smart, highly-motivated students to contribute to the design, implementation, and benchmarking of the OceanStore system. Below is a list of possible OceanStore-related projects that are appropriate for both undergraduates and graduate students. Of course, this is just a small sample of what is possible, so be sure to talk to our project members about any ideas you might have. Please note: these projects are for U. C. Berkeley students only, and are not open to the general public.

• Data Repair (Fall 2001) Traditional archival media are rapidly being replaced with digital repositories. This has generated a need for long-term, digital archival storage. OceanStore has describe the architecture of a global-scale, distributed storage infrastructure that is self-repairing and resilient to faults and malicious attacks. This infrastructure employs erasure-coding to enhance durability, coupled with mechanisms for location-independent routing, introspective failure analysis, and automatic repair. The result is archival storage that has the potential to preserve information indefinitely.
  • implement the part or all of the distributed self-repairing mechanism described in The OceanStore Archive: Goals, Structures, and Self-Repair ,
  • measure and interpret effectiveness of the mechanisms,
  • optionally, improve the general theoretical results.
  This project involves a significant amount of programming. Java programming skills are required.
